I have a 1976 15 hp Sears outboard model# 217/58631-1 on which I am rebuilding the lower unit. There is a plastic retainer on the drive shaft under the water pump that I am trying to get off in order to replace the oil seal. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging it? Looking at the schematics, it does not apear that there is a pin or another retainer preventing the drive shaft from coming out, but the shaft will not pull out the top. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

welcome to iboats bravo 80. just a couple quick questions so i know what to help you with,do you have the lower unit detatched from the motor leg? when you say rebuilding the lower unit are you referring to gearbox assembly or replacing water pump impeller and seals? if you can post pictures that always helps. good luck and i'll try to help you as much as i can.

View attachment 108137View attachment 108138View attachment 108136 the oil retainer is plastic, I use a couple of screw drivers and just pry it up (no retainer) you might gouge it a bit but not a big deal, the seal fits inside from the bottom and there is a rubber O ring around it...just pry and it will come out...if you should really bugger it there available and not to expensive and they come in black instead of the white plastic originals.

Thanks A lot mrcrabs - that is exactly what I am looking at. Can the drive shaft stay installed when removing the retainer and seal? I figure it can be pried on from the inside when the drive shaft is removed, but was worried about mangling it up where the seal sets. On a related note... is the drive shaft supposed to slide out easily? I can see on the schematic that it is has splines and didn't see anything that should prevent it from coming out, but it feels like it is hanging up on something and didn't want to force it.

yep, there all I can afford since the big crash of 2009, I use to have Johnson/Evinrudes laying around :(

edit: Eska's are just something that takes my mind off of my former job as a network administrator/engineer....oops my doctor said I'm not supose to talk about that anymore

ya the groovs in the plastic seal holder prevents the unit from spinning, they match the spigget on the water pump base. the pump base also holds it down. i made a tool to get it to spin to break the crud fiction . it shoud come out without too much damage. an o-ring seals the od and a seal is located on the back side for the shaft.a curclip holds the bearing in place in the housing and a curclip holds the bearing to the shaft. the shaft can be removed after the housing clip is removed. but if it is the first time that the o-ring seal holder has been removed,it will be a son of a gun to get out, however it has to have a lot of damage before you cant reuse it.

You know what? the oil seal retainer on my sears 15hp Eska is brittle and tight...every time I pry or twist it breaks, I have a spare and its made of much softer stuff,

ya , i've seen that problem before. i think they were experimenting with different materials, or some synth gear oils may not react well to the plastic. i made one out of white delrin, it didn't like to be pried on at all. ultra high desity polyethalene seemed to take it much better. i think the next one i make will have some threaded holes to pull it out with. it probibly wont be long cause i just traded a 58 john 10 for a seaco 9.9. i'll let you know how that turns out an send some pics.
