My Starcraft Islander project has the inline 6 165hp engine. I've found an Alpha Gen 2 complete outdrive with gimble, transom plate, and trim pump.
Any idea if this will bolt right up (with the 2 extra holes taken care of)?
Will I need to change the keyhole cutout size?

TIA

Can it be done? Probably... But the gotchas and headaches along the way will drive you insane. The in-line 6 finished in 1981. That's still MC-1 era, so you can only use an MC-1 transom housing. If you try and use the later housings, the rear mounting spacing is different, and they never made a flywheel housing for the 165 to suit the later mounting spacing. Now, if the 140 flywheel housing is the same as the 165, and you can get the right ratio drive with the longer yoke, and the right flywheel and coupler for the 165... maybe....

HTH.

Ayuh,.... Ya gotta drill the two holes, 'n possibly tune up the keyhole abit, or not,....

Marryin' the motor to the transom might prove interestin' though,....

The rear motor mounts/ flywheel cover on yer motor won't fit anything but the MC-1,....

Well, I can't find it now, but I though my research had led me to someone who said that the 4.3 V6 flywheel cover would fit the inline 6Does that sound possible?

ok... I've done the research... The 165 and the 140 use the same flywheel housing, so you can get the later 140 cover on the 165. The engine couplers are also the same, so the current coupler will work. You will also need the newer single piece exhaust elbow (as used by the 140), and a new exhaust pipe to match. You'll also need the newer style shift plate, because the old 165 shift plate was on the inner transom plate and that's gone. But here is one of the 'gotchas'... The 140 shift plate mounts on the engine rocker cover, and they never made a 165 rocker cover with a shift plate mounting. Fabrication time! All you should then need is a drive with a 1.62:1 ratio.

I'm dead sure I will have missed things, but I'm sure you'll find them ;)

Good luck... (I think you'll need it)

Thanks! I own a fab shop, so I could fab up a bracket for the sift plate I think.
The drive that I was going to look at is a 1.84...and I "thought" my pre-alpha drive was close to that ratio.

Trying to talk myself out of simply welding up the keyhole and fabricating an outboard bracket...LOL!

Your MC-1 drive is 1.65:1... Never seen a I/O to outboard conversion that worked properly yet.... What size boat? If it's large and a bit on the heavy side, then the 1.84:1 might be just the ticket.... (Slightly larger pitch prop... Nice!)

22' boat, I'd say a 1.84:1 drive might be a good match... Good luck...
