I HAVE AN OLD MERCURY OUTBOARD. IT SAT UP. I REPLACED EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF EXCEPT FOR THE CARBS. I ONLY RAN IT A LITTLE BIT LAST SUMMER. I PUT IN THE WATER LAST WEEK AT WIDE OPEN I COULDNT EVEN GET ON TOP OF WATER. CHECKED MY CAP AND WIRES. NEW PLUGS AT THE END OF LAST SEASON BUT ONE OF THE WIRES HAD COME LOOSE FROM THE CAP. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULDNT FIND PARTS FOR THIS MOTOR ANYMORE CAN ANYONE HELP

Before you spend a fortune on electric parts, try cleaning the carbs. Get a single used plug wire if one is broken. At $104 you might wanna clean the cap too. This ain't like a car.

-W back from Vacation

Electronic ignition..... clean cap and check carbon brush. Past that it's carbs. I'll be offering a flat rate carb service on ebay in a week or two - too many out there causing trouble.

-W

I am an amatuer and I just pulled 2 carbs off of my 79' 80HP. I don't how different your motor is but there really wasn't much to it. I didn't rebuild with a kit, but I took everything off and soaked them in carb cleaner for 30 minutes. I mean everything, all the jets, idle screws, vents springs, enricher, etc.. Then reset my float level's and put new gaskets on.. My motor wouldn't even start any more.. And now it runs great.. It is amazing, because it just didn't look dirty of clogged.. A good cleaning does miracles..

My opinion.. Easy job.

Easier still if you use a spray cleaner and the little red hose to blast the little passages clean. Minimal dissasembly and no soaking needed.

-W
