Wanted to let you guys know that this will be my first restore for myself. At Easter I was given a 19ft Lund President unseen. So after a week of looking for internet pictures of one I kept coming back to this site only to post for some possible help for what this boat may look like.

Well the wondering got to the best of me and I made to the voyage to southern MN to see if I even wanted this rig. To my surprise it is in pretty good shape. I tossed up some pictures of the way I got to see it.

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Now I am not new to boating, but have never owned my own since my father has been in the boat business since the 70's. In fact I took him with to check this boat out and he remembers selling it and working on it over the years. He knew the orginal owners name and said that he kept this boat for over 20 years. Along with the guy took great care of his stuff, well 2 owners later and some more years gone buy the boat need some TLC and I am going to take it on. Now I only went to look at the boat and see if it was sa project I wanted to get into, so I do not have it home yet, but should be dragging out the diesel and make a road trip. Now if the weather would ever get its act together I would be very greatful for it. I expect this restore will take a couple of seasons to fully comlete, only cause I plan on using this boat this year. I do know it needs a couple mechanical things, steering cables, and a rebuild kit for one of the rams for the lower unit, pops will be getting on them parts this week. Well since I never found a picture of a Lund President boat on the internet, here ya go, enjoy!!!

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Well a quick update if anyone cares. I will be getting the boat home this Saturday and start working on it. I did get a hold of Lund today and they sent me the 1976 flyer for this boat.
The information that is on this site is wrong on length and weight, but that is minor. If anyone knows how to attach a PDF on here I would be more than happy to share the information as it has the listing for all the Glass boats made by Lund in '76. I have tried to use the attachment link, files are too big. I also tried to take pictures of the print out that I did, but they look cheezy. So if anyone wants a copy shoot me a message and I can e-mail them to you, there is only 6 pages.

Cheers Icy

What motor and drive does it have? I wonder how long Lund was in the glass boat business? Good luck with your project.

Lund has made glass boats on and off for many years,.........

I know they are making at least one model in glass again,............

It is the MerCrusier 888 188 302 Ford in it, I was first told it was the inline 6 but soon saw it was the v-8. When I went to look at it my dad was all over the motor so I checked everything else out. I will take more pics when I get it home.

Since I just came in from cleaning the garage I am thinking this thing is not even going to fit. Going to be tough when my garage is only 21ft deep by 23ft wide. Not even sure if I could get the windshield under the door. May have to take it to another place, which is bumming me out a tad, but oh well, guess that is what I get from putting off my building the shop......hmmmm good excuse now to get that going.........lol.

As for glass ya Lund has dabbled in them for years, after looking at the cut-away section of the hull I think if the stringers are gone this will become a major project.

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

OK I am going to need an some input here. I now have the boat home, and as you know I have the flyers for this Lund. I am going to inspecting all that I can as far as the floors etc. Here is what the construction sheet says, and the questions I have is about the transom and this balsa in the boat. I am going to word the flyer as I read it.

15 mil Gelcoat exterior. OK I get this no issues

Polyurethane foam deck for floatation and sound deadening. So I will be trying to find access to see if this is water logged, really no questions.

All stress areas reinforced with hand laid mat and woven roven. I know what this is about as well.

1/2" end grain balsa laid over entire bottom, and extended to spray rail in bow area to eliminate all sheer lines. Completely encased in fiberglass. OK now this balsa from the diagram I have would be a nightmare to get to, how worried do I have to be about that stuff? I will try to get a look at it from the bow.....but the whole floor?

Longitudinal bracing of high grade fir plywood to rigidity of side walls-also form bottoms of ski pockets and side liner bracing. Ya easy enough

Transom is 1 1/2" top grade fir plywood floor , completely encased in fiberglass. Does this mean the wood was encased prior to putting in or is it just that it is pocketed between the glass hull and interior cap?

1/2" top grade fir plywood floor, completely sealed on the bottom with resin, covered on top with a layer of fiberglass. I dont even like the sound of this, I think a new floor maybe in the future covered with epoxy.

Seats - ( I will skip)

Widshield - ( I will skip)

Top grade fir marine plywood stringers. The stringers in the diagram seem to sit on top of the glass that is covering the balsa.....um would this be even correct?

The rest is not important as it just some hype on the swim deck and fasteners.

^^^^^^LOL never mind I know what it means............ROTTEN^^^^^^^

The floor was a patch in job someone did and did very bad. The flooring around the stern is original and is soft. So far the floor is still in and I already know what is underneath as well as I can be rest assured the transom is a mess as well.

No boating this year.........

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

How much foam can be in one boat......you have to love the way they just cut the stingers and made like a deck to support the floor. Along with what you cant see is I found fresh foam plugging a water path to the bilge area. Oh this is going to be a long project.....

I did find the balsa wood, well what is left of it.......soaked like a sponge and the smell reminds me of the little balsa gliders I use to buy at the local drug store in the 70's. Note to self ***Balsa on top of fiberglass covered by foam is not good****

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

OK so now another question, although I think sometimes I am talking to myself on here. But it is a good record for this boat.

Anyway do I dare use Seacast for my 4 stringers that are junk? I have not done the drill test on the transom yet, but will soon will be taken off the swim deck so that may give me a clue if that is rotten as well.

I have read the links of the builds with Seacast and have been on their site to see if this is my fit. I have not seen stringers as long as mine yet done this way, or should I say I have not come across a thread, etc...

Hoping to get the fuel tank out tonight, so more adventure.....

I think SeaCast stringers are cool for a little boat, but would be cost prohibitive for yours.

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Ya after seeing how long and tall the stringers are/were you are correct. I wanted to get the gas tank out last night but the weather was not going to allow me to do a whole lot. I did get the flooring off towards the bow more and seen that I have good stringers left up there, however the bow was full of water so that was my main concern to get that drained by removing more foam. The spade shovel made life easier digging into over a foot of foam.

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Well got home today and pulled the gas tank out, fairly easy...lol has been the easiest thing I have done so far to this boat. I will get more pictures up this weekend, cause does this boat have the glass in it, actully looks like I am making more of a mess than doing it any good. The stringers were once totaly encased in hand laid glass from stringer to stringer, so really I have yet to see the bottom of the hull yet. I found this out by pulling the tank and right smack center was a tear in the glass, were I could stick a few fingers in and then I was able to feel the hull..........woo hoo!!!!! But all that excitement leads me to tell ya what is in the channel under there, oil, silt, and who knows what else. However I am now able to lift the tounge of the trailer with one hand as before I could not budge it. Getting the water out of the bow was a major deal for us Well now back to a little relaxing and polishing the parts I have taken off.

P.S. Wonder when my wife will say something about me setting up the boat chrome in my family room as I clean it............LOL

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Shall see, I have my doubts though about that cause she knows I will start installing in our room on our sleigh bed............lol.

OK got a question. Since I have a closed bow and with the amount of junk I have in my drain passage to the bilge area is it feasible to install a 6" round access cap in the floor of the bow so I can snake, clean out and make sure all is clear for water to flow every year towards the stern? I am already going to install one over the sending unit of the fuel tank and the fitting where the gas feed to the motor is.

Re: 1976 Lund President revival

Well I have froze my butt off getting that foam out. Only 40 out and rain on and off, but the foam is about all out. I did however get a hold of Grant Steering wheels since that was the manufactor of the wooden wheel in my boat. I am trying to get the correct rivits that were in the wheel and the pearl inlay to cover the rivit heads. So shall see if they can match things up next week. I just want to get this hull cleaned up and the weather is not being friendly...........

Re: 1976 19ft Lund President revival

LOL yeppers I am a season ticket holder for the Vikings.

Anyhow here is an update, your not going to like it. I have the motor out and getting ready to tear into the floor at the stern. Of course I already knew the transom was a mess.

So I came inside the house sat down at the desk and figured out cost of glass, wood, resin, etc... Then came the gel coat, the interior, a few parts for the stern drive, and seals for the hyd rams. So far I keep hitting close to 6k and no interior yet. Can I do this?, answer is yes. However I dont think it is cost effective. So I was on the fence of what to do, for a couple of days. So I went out today in the rain and looked at boats, you guessed it 5k and below gets you a rotten treasure for the size I am looking for, amazing how many people dont know squat about boats. Until I came across a Crestliner that a guy had for sale. Over an hour of checking out the boat and I decided that this is money better spent for now. I still would like to do the Lund, but afraid my attention will turn to the new toy as it is lake/river ready. I am detuning my diesel from 670hp at the rear wheels back close to 400 ponies, I cant afford to race the truck anymore, so a new hobby is what I am after with more family fun, and I found it. So now I have my hands full, and the kids well we will be able to boat this year.

(HUGE MISTAKE BRINGING HOME A BOAT THAT NEEDS WORK WITH KIDS)

Anyway here are a few shots....
