After installing new impeller, with lower unit still off the outboard and on the workbench, I have to really put some effort into turning the prop counterclockwise to get the driveshaft to turn clockwise. Impeller is installedd properly with fins opposite of ckockwise. With old impeller, I coud turn prop w/ one finger. I realize old impeller was bent and putting little resistance against housing but just wanted to be sure that turning with resistance is normal before I put LU back on. I have to use my whole hand to turn the prop. Is this normal?? Thanks in advance for all replies

Forward(?), (turning driveshaft clockwise). Update: Checking again, it's tight turning in fwd and reverse.

I have resistance in one direction when impeller is installed correctly. The other direction is easier to spin it. When the fins of the impeller try to spin in reverse, they catch and prevent it from turning. I would not try and force it to spin backwards because you might flip the fins over on the impeller. If it were me Id fire her up and see if shes spraying water.

The fins are facing the correct direction. I will take housing off again and triple check and then give it a go. Of course, I realize that turning prop either way results in the shaft still only spinning clockwise. Probably just cause it's a new impeller (I hope) If I loosen housing screws a bit, she turns easily. Extra turn to tighten and the resistance sets in

If the fins are in the right direction just start her up with some muffs on. I always put oil on the fins when installing to make the install easy, and so that the dry rubber doesnt give it premature wear on the first start.

Started her up and she pumped water like nobody's business. Will take her down to the Sacramento delta tomorrow for sea trials.
