My 1976, 55hp Evinrude acts as though it kind of loads up while idling in gear. It will idle fine, then start loading up. After a few minutes it finally dies. It restarts quickly...... then the same scenario.

It also seems to be using LOTS of fuel, when I open it up. It runs fine, but like I said it SUCKS in the gas.

I had asked a mechanic, he thought that the bottom gasket of the power head might be leaking, and sucking some air, but did not know for sure, if anyone has any ideas I sure would appreciate it.

How do the plugs look?

What are they gapped at ?

Spark test ?

Have the carbs been serviced recently?

Good grounds ?

A few things to check.

Do you have a manual ?

If not, get one, preferably motor specific , OEM.

They should be a tan color , if thats what you mean.

If their , clean and look new, there's water getting to them.

As far as using more fuel then it should.

What are you using to guage this?

Past gas useage.

Are you still turning the same rpm's , at WOT .

Or have you added more weight, carrying more .

If your motor is lugging , fuel useage can go through the roof.

Surely, you've allready had a mechanic rule out the leaking gasket.

If not , your wasting your time , trying to correct anything else.

If you have ruled it out , and your sure its just using more fuel.

Everything being equal, ie: running the same , nothing as far as, boat weight, set-up etc. having been changed.

I'd do a complete tune-up.

Including a carb rebuild, check all ignition components, spark test , timing , link and sync. etc. etc .etc.

.
