I have a 1976 55hp johnson i do not know the serial number. I can get it to crank just fine but it will not start. I had it running when i first got to the lake but then it died and would not start back. Also the top idle screw vibrates out at high speed so i got some light duty locktite but I do not know how to adjust the idle could you please let me know the procedure for setting the top and bottom idle screws.

Sounds like it might be time to rebuild the carb. Get an OEM manual and it should be pretty simple. I do not have a manual for your engine but locktite should not be the answer for that adjustment screw.

The idle screw threads should be an interference fit in the advance arm. You need a manual to set the carbs and timing. I would recomend OEM carb kits instead of aftermarket.

Use a good carb cleaner and compressed air to make sure that it is clean.
