I just installed a 55 hp and took iyt out and tested it. It ran right up to 5500 and ran smooth. When I put it in reverse it went back a little and died. I ran with the cowl off to listen to it so I don't know if that really matters or not.

After it died, the spark was almost non-existent. It cranks OK and it did not change with the kill switch disconnected or the big red plug disconnected.
Surely the engine stalling like that wouldn't burn out the stator could it. It just seems weird that it would happen all of a sudden after running so well.
My manual has a procedure to troubleshoot it, I have never performed these ohm tests before but I guess that should determine what went haywire.
It just seems like it is too much of a coincidence.

Any thoughts or opinions would be welcome.

after it sits overnight check and see if you have good spark again. If you do, it sounds like coils or something breaking down when it warms up! Good luck and post back results!

I disconnected the yellow and yellow/gray wires and have way over the recommended 1.5 ohms. Its like 200 or so. Checking each to ground is low but the testing of the two together tells me bad stator. I have a new stator and timer base on the shelf. I should be going tonight or at least early tomorrow.
