Re: 1976 650 tilt trim needed
The older Mercs used a 2-ram setup, with the hydraulic cylinders (rams) mounted on brackets, in place of the shock absorbers. This was a 2-hose-per-cylinder PT&T with the pump mounted inboard, under the motor splashwell.
Your best bet would be to find a parts motor on Craigslist with the complete PT&T setup. You could also piece it together from sources such as eBay, but there's a lot of little bits & pieces and it'll probably cost an arm-&-a-leg bought that way.
This PT&T setup was used on any number of 2, 3, 4, and 6-cylinder motors and is pretty much the same for any of them.
If you can find a good deal on a complete setup with intact hoses, that's all the better. The 4 hoses themselves will be quite expensive to replace if it doesn't come with.
Here's a brand-new Merc power trim kit, the only one I was able to find on eBay, it's from the U.K. and quite expensive at $707 plus $120 shipping:
Power Trim Kit P T T Unit for Mercury Mariner Outboard Engines | eBay
At least it'll give you an idea of what the parts look like.
As an alternative, there are aftermarket PT&T kits which mount the motor on a PT&T-equipped plate. CMC is a major mfr of these:
Electric Hydraulic Power Tilt And Trim PT-130 without Gauge - CMC 13002 - iboats
You have to be sure to get one that meets or exceeds your hp rating. For example, the PT-35 is max rated for 35hp whereas the PT-130 is good to 130hp.
One of these may be cheaper than finding all the parts for the OEM PT&T. I'd take a hard look at Craigslist 'cause many times you'll see the parts for sale either separately or on a dead motor.
Here's an example of the OEM PT&T on a vintage G3, picture courtesy of my good buddy Dr. Frankenmerc of Shelton, WA.
