Hi Everyone,

I just bought a 1976 6 hp Evinrude or Johnson 6604 or 6605???? It had sat for 3 or 4 years so when I got it home I did standard maintenance on it....I changed oil in lower unit, replaced spark plugs, cleaned fuel filter, and rebuilt the carb. I tried getting it started then but then realized I needed to replace the fuel pump so I got a new fuel pump and put it on and it ran fairly well. I took it out on the Lake this past weekend and it started and ran fine for a while and then acted like it was flooded leading me to believe it was getting too much gas. I took it out again yesterday and ran it around the lake for a while and found out that it will start and stay idling if I leave the choke about half pulled it throttles up and down fine and I can get it moving. Once I get it going I can push the choke in and it runs great at higher RPM's and faster on the throttle. Once I start idling down though I have to pull the choke out about halfway again and let it idle and it does fine. This leads me to believe that it is not getting enough gas to keep it running or something is wrong with the carb adjustment. Can anyone help me out with my problem I can deal with having to run it the way I am I'd just like it to run normal. Could it also be that it is just a cold blooded motor and needs time to warm up before it runs well? Didn't seem like it to me because I ran it all the way across the lake the other day and when I throttled down with no choke it started to die on me. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick
