Did you disassemble and clean the carbs? Try constantly priming the bulb on the fuel hose and see if if performs better.

You will have to idle it up higher in the water than on muffs to make up for the backpressure in the water. It should be set for 800rpm in gear at idle.

Yes carbs were removed and clean and compression test was done and they checked gear lube and shifting. I can get it going in water if some one throttles it a little once thats done its fine the whole time till I shut it off.

Re: 1976 85hp evinrude issues

I have a manual now and still cant figure out my issue I took it out today and it never even fired 1 time I also notices when I was sitting and trolling oil/gas was dripping but I have no idea where all lines on pump filter and carbs apears to be dry only thing I can think it the tube that runs from bottom of carb cover maybe i am losing gas while not running?? when I un hook fuel line it dose not drip. Yesterday I took it out and was amazed it ran great and started easy but then after fishing i found starter was loose and so I checked into it and the starter had a bolt way to small on the front carb side and the top side bolt had snapped so fixed that and hoping for better luck tomorrow!!

That airbox drain hose is supposed to drain any fuel that leaks from the carbs and recirculate it back into the combustion process through a hose barb on the intake manifold for the bottom cylinder.
