Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Decker, JB, GT, TDF, and all of you Iboaters, I hope ya'll had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I actually got to burn calories today sanding on the cap. After about 3 or 4 straight hours of it, I am finaly done with this area. We are taking our kids to the circus tomarrow so Sunday morn I'll be picking up some of that pretty plywood and I might be able to make some real progress.

OH yeah......TDF and GT, I also agree with ya'll. It is ALOT of work for little gain. I'll do it basically like JB suggested. Thanks ya'll.

Update: I was hope'n I would be able to cut the storage opening large enough to fit the tank in after the cap was in place but it was not possible unless I sacraficed alot of the seat base and pylon area of the deck. I was wanting to have the option to remove the gas tank if I needed to but o'well. I'm sure I could find a way to do it later in life if I had to.

I got under here and traced the lip. I will have to trim it back about a 1/4 inch.

I was going to just add some trim around the opening to create the lip for the lid BUT I want to make sure this thing will hold up to extra wieght.

Have a good one ya'll.

Looking good Jitterbug.

Since I think you're planning on sealing those with glass, I will remind you to think about clearances to allow for the thickness of said glass.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Ok.....how would ya'll install the rear fishing deck? How many layers and what mat and cloth to use? I have my own ideas BUT I do not know why I would used this many layers or why I would use this fabric and that fabric.:laugh: Which fabric should I use last so I could have a smooth finish. Do I just sand the last layer until I have a smooth finish?

In friscoboater's searay thread, he TABBED the transom in. I was thinking of using this same strategy in installing the deck but I will mix the stringer installation in there. Example: Tabbing it in useing CSM, 1708, CSM, 1708. BUT I need to fit the surfacing wax in there. Should I just mix it in with the resin that will be used on the last layer of 1708?

After the tabbing, would it be alright to just add 1 layer CSM, then 1 layer of 1708 over the rest of the area.

What about the inside of the cap or bottom? I will probably do this upside down btw. But how many layers of what?
Again, I will be installing a ski pylon.

I ask you guys because you all know the strength of the glass and I could be wasting money by WAY over doing it and you guys know the best and easiest way to do it.

I said I Could be wasting money by over doing it because I first planned on laying full sheets across the entire deck. Thats alot of glass and resin, if it can be avoided....GREAT.....if not, so be it.

I'm going to go seal the deck now. I do know how to do that.

Have a good one ya'll.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

I got part of the bench glassed this evening. I layed a total of 4 layers csm. Thats counting the large strips I used for build up at each end of the hole. I'll test it tomarrow to see if I need to add more layers. I used panel boards to keep everything somewhat flat. During the precoat I realized I forgot to cover the panel board with wax paper so it might be there to stay. It depends if I can remove it without causing too much damage. Ya'll have a good one.

WOW... That is great looking glass work you have done...It is going to look awesome when your done..
If you can not get the panel boards out just put a layer of csm on the back side and be done..

Thanks Decker! Yeah, the panels are there to stay I have to say. That dude is NOT coming loose without major damage to the glass. I'll trim as much as I can from the back side and sand it smooth so I can be able to make a good lay up. Use PB if necessary, add a layer of 1.5. And I think it would be a good time to use resin with the wax additive.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Seems like I've done little work today with all the prepping. I got the first layer down for the bottom part of the bench. Looks like crap but the end result should look alright when I'm done. Good thing about fiberglass is you can build up, then sand the unnecessary off. Which is what I plan to do. There is major sagging on my first layer (it was expected) but I'll build it up as needed. I should have took the time to prep the panel board for the fit so I could have eliminated some of the sagging but oh well. I'm not going to blame it on my laziness, I blame my lack of time.:laugh:

After I trimmed the over lap. If you look close, you can see some of that itchy stuff floating around.

No its not a giant air bubble, the white looking area in the middle is wax paper under the mat.....wait....it is a giant air bubble.

Hopefully the glass will be flexible enough (without cracking) to get the humps out. If not, I'll break out the grinder.

I bought a pint paint container, came with a lid, to use for cleaning my chip brushes. Put a lil' acetone it and it held every drop of it for 3 or 4 days. Used the same acetone to clean my brushes tonight. I cut a little off the handles so I could put the lid on the can wile the brushes soaked.

You're making some good progress there jitterbug.:joyous: I like the paint can idea for a solvent bath, simple and effective.

Yeah, for now. I'll be at another stand still soon. Just about out of resin and CSM. I might have just over a gallon. I hope I have enough to finish the seat and atleast PB the fishing deck. I need about 2 more layers of CSM on the seat. I'm building it up JUST alittle high so I can sand it down smooth. I'm going to mix enough PB for the deck so I can fillet the squeeze out. I need squeeze out on the top and the bottom of the deck. I will have a extra hand (father-in-law) in doing this. He can fillet the top of the deck wile I crawl underneath the cap and fillet the bottom. The tongue depressors from US Composites make filleting really neat and easy btw. Pack of 50 for like 3 bucks.

But before the deck installation, I need to prep the underside of the cap for glass. A light pass with the grinder should do the trick. There is alil' foam still hanging around under there and alot of stray glass fibers sticking out. Then I'll PB the deck in and fillet the squeeze out. I figure glassing upside down will be a pita. I'll have to make sure the precoat is good and sticky, and I'll try not to add to much resin on the glass during the official lay up. I would hate to get that stuff on my full face respirator.

I've smacked myself right in the eyebrow with a paint stick wile mixing a tub of PB. Not cool at all! For one, I already had resin with the cat added so what do I do.....lay some glass. I wiped off what I could real quick and started laying the glass. A few minutes later the resin on my eyebrow started kicking. Man, did it start to burn! My eyebrows were sticking out like stray stands of CSM. Thank the Lord I didn't get it directly in my eye. I wasn't hurt so I can laugh now, but people please use your PPE. That one time may not be a funny situation. I got lucky and I'd rather be good.

Anyway, I have to do some detail work to the top of the fishing deck, nothing major. My f-i-l tried his hand at alittle glass'n on it. He learned to just let the overhang.....hang, instead of trying to wrap the short overhang around a sharp edge.:D
Not much done today, Layed a few layers on the bench and test fit the deck a few times. I had to trim just alil' off the cap to get a suitable fit. Ya'll have a good one.
