Have a 1976 115 Evinrude that I've inherited. Motor has not been used in years, & no remote control with it. Was given a remote control of unknown origin that's been painted. Haven't been able to find any ID numbers on the exterior. Round decal on shift lever(?) reads "OMC" 3 times in a circle. Chased it down on the internet through illustrations of parts breakdowns & it looks to be 1992 vintage. The electrical cord is attached (round red plug at end). How can I determine the compatibility of the motor & RC? One more quick question...The model no. of this motor appears to read "115693E. Everywhere I look online, all I can find any reference to are "115693D or G", no "E". What is the significance of this suffix letter? BTW, I have ordered the Seloc manual for this motor. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to give me.

The good news: the 92 control box should have a red plug, which will plug right into the engine harness under the cowling. That 76 engine did use older style shift and throttle cables which changed in 79. (the cable ends are different.) You may be able to adapt those cables. These newer control boxes used the push-to-choke key switch, which is really convenient. Also, they have an emergency stop lanyard, also a nice feature. Also, if you have the factory trim system on the engine, it's nice to have the trim switch mounted in the control box throttle handle. (I think the 76 trim switch was dash mounted.) Your 76 trim system has a solenoid in the circuitry for the "up" movement on the trim motor. You may or may not have that with your engine.... Any single letter to the far right of the model number is a factory reference and usually has little meaning to the consumer. A seloc manual is not of much value when working on that engine. You really need an original factory manual-you can still get one from the original printer: Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee.

Thank you for your informative reply, emdsapmgr. I took your advice & ordered a factory manual from Ken Cook.

did you ever solve this? I have the same problem

I too "inhereted" a '76. I blew a 85 last year and still have those controls. I'm having problems recycling the controls on the '85 setup to work on the '76. The pre '79 just has a bare wire and it's up to you to adapt cables. The '85 is a pre-assembled/pinned on the engine side, and an eyelet that doesn't appear removable on the controls side. However, i don't see anywhere one can order the eyelet as a conversion on the controls side.

Oh yea, i kept the 3 wire trim. If i were to convert to the 2 wire, i have issues mounting the relay box. The 3 wire is optimal because one can buy the access port for the starter solenoid and just place it on the starboard side of the engine to hold the extra relay. Guy at the outboard marina suggested it and works great.
