Bought 1976 evinrude and had to replace starter solenoid to get it to start. ran it on muffs at the house to test and it ren ok. got it to the water and had to use manual choke to get it to start. finally got it started and out on the water. ran for about 5-10 mins on full tank of gas. It used up all the gas 18 gals and died. tried to restart but have not had any luck since. have checked for spark and not getting any, tested all wiring and don't seem to be getting any spark at all. confused on why no spark after running out of fuel. HELP!!!

Weak electrical components tend to fail once the engine comes up to normal operating temps. Now that the engine has cooled, you may find that it will start and run. Regardless, you probably have some part of the ignition system which has/is failing and needs immediate replacement. Could be the power pack, stator or the timer base. (unlikely that all 4 coils failed at once.) All are expensive to replace. Some ignition tests performed according to the factory service manual should steer you in the right direction. You can get the original manual from Ken Cook co. in Milwaukee.

Re: 1976 evinrude 135 won't start after running out of fuel

We have tried evrything from replacing power pack to rectifier. we took of the flywheel yesterday and the stator looked to be almost new so we didn't try to take it off. anyway the one we had was not the right one. we are kind of at a loss now. I was just wondering what happens when you motor is running wide open and suddenly runs out of gas and quits. is there some timing involved like in a car? I know in a car motor it can jump time if that happens. Reason I asked is because everything seemed to be working fine when we first started it. I have ordered new carb kits to rebuild the carbs, but I'd like to get some spark at least by the time I get the carbs finished.

Have you done any diagnostics on the timer base sensor output?

Start by making sure that you are turning a minimum of 250 RPM or you won't get spark. You need a fully charged, powerful battery to get there.

When the engine is cold, you always need to enrich the fuel/air mix by using the choke, and you need to advance the timing by raising the warm up lever. If your remote control does not have a war up lever, learn how to manually override the control so that you can advance the timing.

Re: 1976 evinrude 135 won't start after running out of fuel

took boat toshop and was told that both stator and power pack were out. more bad news, seems like the transom is going to need to be reworked. saw some cracks and supposedly the wood has rotted. any ideas? should I junk this thing or keep working on it. I think i can replace both stator and power pack myself now only worry is if transome is going to hold up til I can do a full scale repair.
I'm going to need some pricing for both power pack and stator.

if you go through an aftermarket company such as sierra or cdi, they are not too bad. powerpack should be less than 100, stator might be between 200-300. check a company called bargin bilge. as for the transom i redid mine with a stuff called nidabond. it came out really good and was not too expensive. cost me less than 500 to do a 20' robalo cc. it's not too hard to do by yourself if you have a vaccum, drill and chainsaw. plenty of people on here have used it. do a search for it and you will find step by step how to's.
