Picked this beast up for free. It's a 1976 40hp w/o electric shift. It sat for YEARS but appears to be in great shape. I was wanting to take out the shaft extension and rebuild it (myself) to like new condition. I have a couple of questions (new to outboard repairs):
#1 - is this a good quality motor that is going to be reliable and last?
#2 - is it worth it to rebuild?
#3 - by the looks of the pictures, does it even need a rebuild? (Cylinders just need a little cleaning...no scoring...the rusty piston's cylinder has some very minor corrosion at the top but it should come off with some steel wool)
#4 - how do the pistons look? I'm not sure what's normal...should I replace?
#5 - would it be a good idea to tear it apart and check the crankshaft, etc.? or should it all be fine? Any little tests I can do to see if it's fine?
Here's the motor (less corrosion than appears...just dirty...VERY little corrosion):
