Hello,

I am trying to pinpoint the issue we are having with our 1976 Evinrude 6hp.

We got this motor with a boat we purchased and it had the original points system, there was a bit of play in the armature plate and it was causing the gap to change and not run correctly. We changed both coils, fuel pump, spark plug wires/boots, clean the carb and we were only getting spark in the bottom cylinder.

We decided to switch from the points system to the transistorized ignition via the nova 2 chips. We tested spark and both were sparking, seemed like we solved the issue. We got it on the boat and into a tub of water and once we got it running the top coil was not sparking once again.

Does anyone know a good place to start on trying to solve this issue?

Pictures of the armature plate/ coils and nova 2 chips attached.

The plate support under the ignition plate may be upside down, producing the wobble.

6hp is a great motor and points are also a good system why not reinstall the points clean / gap them properly

condenser may be bad

keep coil wire away from the cam lobe !

test secondaries... boot to frame 3-7 KOhms depending on coil make

Coil not putting out or spark plug not firing?
NGK plugs? Seen several failures this year with great coil energy and nothing firing in the cylinder?

test coil sparks with a screwdriver in the boot held close to the engine frame.. if OK ...... bad plug
