1976 evinrude 6hp wont run.

So i got this motor for free from my dads friend, its a 6hp nothing special i had to get the plastic recoil piece, and had it running no problems, i took it to a local river and ran it all day no problems except it would be driving and all a sudden seem like it hit neutral, then go away. went home and took it again another weekend had it warming up at the boat ramp and it stalled out and seemed to of seiged up you cant pull the rip cord, and no noise is heard from the shifter (as in a click from going from reverse to forward vise versa) so my father and me arent exactly pros, we know the basics but were into car mechanics. anywho he thinks it has somthing to do with the shift mechanism in the lower unit. any body have any ideas? were planning to tear it apart this weekend. i wanna get the manual first though. oh yea it was also on my 14 starcraft seafarer.

Are you sure it is a 1976?

Check to see if you have a rock wedged between the propeller and the cavitation plate. I had that happen once and it seized up the whole motor. It took me a little while to find the rock.

If power head will not turn over, drop lower unit and see if it will turn over. Will tell what is seized, power head or lower unit.

When you have it in neutral can you spin the prop? When in Forw. or Rev. can you spin the prop? Rick.
