1976 evinrude 85 cooling tubes

I recently got this motor off a friends boat and wow at the small problems. I changed the water pump yesterday and one of the cooling tubes is in bad shape it is shorter than the other and has jagged edges. I put the foot back on anyway and it leaks from various spots. I ran the motor for a short while on muffs and engine didnt seem to get very warm at all. Im gonna have to use it as is for a tournament that is comming up. My question is can i drop the exhaust housing and change the tubes or do I have to pull the power head?

The water tubes are stock copper tubing sizes, so get a caliper and measure it, buy a piece the same size and a sleeve to tie it together. Then you can solder it. A plumber could do that for you.​

I went and took another look at the tubes they are going to be to far up in the ehxaust housing to do any soldering of new tubing on them. How hard is it the remove the housing? Looks like the power head may have to come off to ge to a couple of bolts? Does anyone have a diagram of the removal proceedure.

The tubes are attached to the powerhead adapter by a flange. Yes, the powerhead and powerhead adapter has to come off to replace them. Not a small job.

All the powerhead bolts except the powerhead stud nut plus four in the pan. It can be removed without pulling the powerhead with the proper tools. Watch out for breaking bolts. I would change the t-stat while you are there or at least test it. Pretty simple to solder just clean it up with plumbers sandpaper, flux, and solder the couplings. Make sure you buy hard copper not soft. Best way I have found it makeing them long then cut to the proper length that way it will bevel the end that goes into the water pump. Solder is simple just heat the middle of the cupling and alow the solder to flow through the fiting. If it on its side you only have to touch the top side and it will flow.

It sounds like it would be just as easy to swap the power head to the housing that my 115 is on. The tubes are fine on that one. Think Ill save alot ot time by doing this. Figure I can take the 115 power head off in about an hour then the 85 head off and back on in about two hours. What do u think??
