1976 evinrude 85 hp sheared flywheel key

i have removed flywheel and found the key sheared, kinda good news cos i had no idea what else could be wrong. any way, are the keys hard to find? and what is the procedure for re-install as my service manual says nothing!! thanks.

Any Evinrude dealer can supply a new key. It is special, not a hardware store item.

OK, it sheared because somebody installed it wrong. Done right, they will never shear. Did it damage the keyways or tapers? If it did, you may be out of luck.

To do it right:
1. Crank and flywheel tapers must be undamaged, and clean and dry. No oil no grease, and absolutely no Locktite!!! Key slots must not be battered

2. You Must use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 Ft Lbs

there is light scoring on the flywheel taper, hopefully not to much! is it 100-105 ft Lbs or inch pounds?

Follow FR's torque spec. If you see any crud or rust buildup on either the shaft or the flywheel, you may want to do a process called "lapping the flywheel." Remove the key and put some "valve lapping compound" on the flywheel and crank mating surfaces. Install the flywheel and slowly rotate it back and forth by hand. Once the two surfaces are shiny, clean the compound off well and install the key and torque. The light grit in the compound will polish the mating surfaces so that there is more even contact when the flywheel is retorqued.

Foot Lbs. I use a piece of rope (cotton) and feed it into the spark plug hole so the piston hits the rope and locks the motor for torqueing down the nut.
