1976 EVINRUDE 9.9 NEW WATER PUMP DOESN'T WORK

I just bought this 1976 10625H 9.9 long shaft evinrude and got it running but no water circulation so I replaced the water pump and it does not work, The impeller is turning for sure, I put the leg in a bucket of water almost up to the pump so every hole was covered and spun it with a drill but it just does not pump water and neither does the old pump, There are no blockages i can pour water down through the leg and it comes out everywhere it should. There is a gap under the wear plate but I assume its to allow water to be sucked in to the pump. I have replaced pumps and impellers before without a problem but this one has me beat There is a flat spot on the shaft for a keyway and a small pin that I locate with grease. I have held the punp housing up about 10mm and I can see the impeller spinning but the pump wont suck or pump, I even put water in the pump from the outlet but no joy. Any clues anyone, it got me buggered

The bottom plate of the pump and the leg needs to be sealed so there are no suction leaks. I bet if ya put the motor in the water past the pump it will pump. They like a flooded suction until primed.

Water must be 8" above the pump in your bucket.

Hi, thanks for your help, I will completely submerge it and try again with a tube coming out of the pump and see if it pumps anything

Those pumps are quite simple.------A new impeller and 99 out of 100 will pump just fine.

I have put the gearbox in the water so the bottom of the pump is covered but still no pumping ? do I need a bigger bucket, does it need to be deeper for some reason ?

What parts did you use ?------Factory or something else ?----Yes , water must be 6" above the pump when testing with a drill.----Hard to believe it is not pumping.----Passageway below the pump is clear ?----parts assembled correctly ?----Turning it the right way ?----Or bring it over as it is an easy fix.

Hi , Thanks for the help, I am going to bunnings to buy a bigger bin and make sure its deep oin the water, I will pull it off again and check the passage way again , yes turns clockwise and the impeller was fitted bt turning it in clockwise. I will let you know how I go

WHILE I am here is the centre of the X the best place to drill in the side plate for a tell tale hole, when I can find a small hollow elbow

Did reversing the impeller solve the problem ? It's often said that the vanes flip over the right way themselves if installed "incorrectly"

Yes it did solve the problem, it might take more reves than a drill gives to auto reverse the impeller

Also, those models (1974 to 1976) don't shoot much water out the back until the motor warms up and the T-stat starts to open. Usually just a fine mist out the back hole for the first 20 or 30 seconds or so.

I have now drilled my side plate and put in a pee hole which has a fine but good spout
