Hi,
I am looking at purchasing a 1976 Glastron v-174 with the Volvo engine. There is water in the oil pan. Any one knows if this is serious (crack block) or an easy fix such has head gasket. I am looking at a most common faults for water in the pan. Just a note that where I am located, it is cold during winter months, well bellow freezing.

Run the other direction.

I just bought a Glastron V174 1977 model with a Mercrusier 165 and it came with the bonus cracked block/blown head gasket. I was stupid, in a hurry and forgot to check the oil. I thought everything was fine since the engine was running ok. I am lucky I have the Chevy motor as that is the cheap part, but now I might get into outdrive issues. When I bought this boat it was assumed to be turnkey.

If the motor wasn't taken care of (water in the oil is a good indication it wasn't) what makes you think the rest of the boat was?

If you want a project then that is another story.

The boat is cheap. My dad had a 1969 Glastron with the same 4 Cyl. Volvo motor. The boat was great. Never had issue with the motor. A had gasket I can do, a cracked block, no chance. I would have to find an other motor for it. Maybe I can get one from a mid 80's volvo car....
