Re: 1976 Johnson 200hp Tach ( RPM) Help!!!!!!!!!

I believe your motor is a 12 alternator pole (6 pulse) motor. You show two different tachs, but both have positions for 12 pole (position #4 on the first shown, and position #5 on the second). You need switched 12v+ to the positon marked "bat", 12v- (ground) to the position marked "gnd", and signal from the alternator to the position marked "sig". The purple wire from your control box should be 12v+ switched (powered when you turn on the ignition switch). Any 12v- (ground) will work (look for black wires going to a terminal block behind the dashboard). The signal is from a gray wire (possibly on the terminal block by the rectifier)and you ccan run your own wire if you can't find it at the dash. I would check the schematic in the factory manual to confirm my response.
Good luck
PS in the last pic it looks like a solid gray wire at the top of the pic

Re: 1976 Johnson 200hp Tach ( RPM) Help!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the quick reapply, I found the purple switch wire on the control, and the -12v ground, Now I have the tach connected to a non switch 12v from the fuse box is this wrong? Do I have to use a 12v switch on the tach? Also here is the only purple wire coming from next to the rectifier to the big red wire harness connector. I do not see any other gray wire.
Thank you

If the purple is non switched, possibly the red is switched. Use a meter to determine which gets hot only when the key is on and use that one. Was that a gray wire I saw in your control box (last pic of your second entry)? Should be the same color as the hot for your fuel gage, volt meter, etc....

The purple is switched, I just don't have the tach connected with that wire, I have the tach connected to a Non-switched +12v from the fuse box. If I have to have the tach connected to a +12v switched wire let me know and I will do that. What you see on the picture it is a gray wire coming from the harness to the fuse 5 amp max you can see it in this picture.
Thank you

For testing any 12v+ will do. Just be sure to disconnect when you finish each day. Look at the bundle of wires coming up from the stator next to the fly wheel. You should see the gray wire there. Trace it up to the terminal block and you can run your own signal wire from there. I can't emphasize enough how much a factory manual will help make jobs like this less of a headache. You may also have success finding the gray on the motor side of the large red connector of the harness. Check to see if there is a gray (or possibly a different color that connects to the gray) on the controller side that travels up to the helm.

The pictures of the control box look very similar to a box I just took apart. The last pictures shows the purple, gray and I am assuming balck wire just above your finger. That is the plug for a tach connection. All the wireing is right there for you to use. You could get the mating plug form a dealer or just cut and splice the wires to your tach. angus63 explained what each wire is for.

Dave, that's what I thought but the fact that the gray is "fused" doesn't make sense. Eula, be sure that the gray, purple, and black are not fused, but simply terminate at a plug. If so, those are the three you need like Dave mentioned.

Hi, I only assume it was a fuse because the cover has writing in it 5 amp max, but all I have to do now is just buy the mating connector and it will work with the tach that I have or I will have to buy one from omc? Do you guys know the matting connector part number? Is this the part that I should buy?

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTarget=search&hvarTextId=33233&hvarAID=yahoo&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=Search&cm_pla=Yahoo%21%20Shopping%20Product%20Submit&cm_ite= DDI%20Link

Thank you

helo
no cutting or splicing is nessasary. go buy the 15 dollar tach harness and remove the black rubber cap just below your ign switch. that is the tach connection point. if you buy the tach harness its color coded on the tach end and plug and play on the box end
