1976 johnson 40 hp

can anybody tell me if 1976 40 hp johnson with electric start has a thermosat ,cant find it .motor is over heating when ideling.put new impeller in. turn shaft clockwise vanes are pointing to left.removed water jacket plate thas fasten to head. fasten water hose to pipe in leg water poured from water jacket clear as can be,checked screen ,it was clear.when i put leg back on and ran motor still no water coming from water jacket,i am, at my wits end here ,need help bad. regards

No thermostat on that one.
Are you running this in a barrel of water to test it?
Make sure the impeller key is in place, and the bottom water pump plate and housing are in good shape and sealed down.
ALso make sure the rubber grommet for the water line is good.

If you're running it in a barrel the water should be about 5" above the gear case and exhaust housing split.
