Does anyone know if you can measure the output from the magneto trigger coil with a voltage meter, and if so, what the output should be? I have no spark at the spark plugs on either cylinder.

There is no trigger coil on the 1976 40hp Johnson, simply a driver coil and points. I assume you're speaking of the driver coil.

You can easily check the driver coil with a ohm meter by disconnecting the leads and connecting the meter between them as follows.

Rope model - 1.45 ohms +/- .4 ohms

Electric model - 2.7 ohms +/- .5 ohms

Consider the driver coil to be good if within the above ranges.

Note where the driver coil sits. There is a slight bevel on that aluminum seat. The metal upright portions of the driver coil should align perfectly with the edge of that bevel in order to be the correct distance from the flywheel magnets.
