Hello all I’m trying to work on the trim for my newly acquired boat and all the old buttons and knobs don’t work. I’ve already replaced a few and now I’m trying to tackle the power trim. Can’t seem to get it working. And ideas or manuals on how to fix this and what kind of switch I’ll need to hook up to get it working again? Can’t seem to find anything online and the manual I bought for the boat doesn’t mention it.. right now I have to use a piece of 2x4 to prop it up when I’m not using it and that’s getting old. Any help is much appreciated!

Theres a few things that can go wrong with these, often its the relays. I got some cheap online not so long ago.
There are two systems, a 2 wire and a 3 wire that come back off the tilt unit. Ive forgotten how to test the three wire.
I dont think its hard.
But the 2wire is easy. Just look the wires up to the battery one way and the motor will go either up or down. Then reverse it and the motor will do the other.
If nothing happens then your problem is in the trim unit or the wire to it. If that works then you will need a relay system and a switch that has three positions. Its not that complicated but would take a weekend to type it up. Theres a good video il see if i can find it

I doubt it compared to pictures of trim motors that I’ve seen but could this possibly be it?

Not every outboard of that era had PTT,
l think it was an extra cost,

I remember back in the 80's ringing and asking ( in Australia ) sellers if the 2nd hand 70's motors on offer had PTT,

Anyway, if it has PTT it should have the wiring going through the. port transom clamp,
No wiring?
Probably no PTT,

But if it does AND it is is a 3 wire dark blue is up and dark green is down,
Just tested my '78 70 hp.hp project Johno

You would.have had a tilt system on that motor. The rams and motors would have been external and easy to see. It would have been very similiar to this one https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N6T5m2H-SfM

Ah gotcha that looks more like what I was expecting. Guess I will have to do mine by hand lol sucks but it is what it is. I’m guessing it’s also pretty costly to add that aftermarket? Thank all of y’all for the help and replies!

You have no power trim or tilt...and you need to install a mounting bolt in that lower side clamp!!!
