I found the motor in the title on Craig list for under $500. The motor looks like it's in excellent conditions from the picture, best appearing one I have found. Just tuned and carb cleaned ready to run, according to the add. My question is even if it starts and seems to run would you guys\gals trust a almost 40 year old motor on your boat? Is it priced right?

I am personally scared to go on open water with a 40 year old ob but bAsed on what i been reading they seem to be indestructible. Just make sure all your i's are dotted and your t's are crossed. Meaning you have great compression good spark clean lower unit and good gas lines. Just my opinion. I see youtube videos of people running these older obs all day long

There are many people who would rather go out with an older motor in good condition.-----Some of the new fangled motors may in fact be less reliable.------Install a new water pump impeller before you leave the dock.

and just for perspective, the ones I trust most are 20 years older than that!

good idea to confirm the model number (for yr. and hp). Earlier 9.5s usually go for a little less (not always).

There is no motor that is 100% reliable but those motors are as good as any. My 75 9.9Hp has never let me down. I fouled one plug before but the other cylinder got me home without any problem.

If it does let you down and you are forced to grab the oars and row, just keeps saying what I always say ..."thank god this is an outboard and not an airplane".

Here is a link to the motor. Thanks for all the replies

9.9 HP. JOHNSON O/B (1976) fresh tune up!! Short shaft/ 2 stroke

when you go check it out let me start and run it in a tub in all gears 5-10 min ensure it is peeing well and not over heating, Check for over heat marks on the power head, shut it down and do a warm compression check. I do not know what the manual says for that engine i am sure people on here know. Then take it out the tub and check the lower unit bottom plug to ensure no water leaks out with the oil.

price seems pretty good (It's the 9.9 -- not the older 9.5 that some people try to sell for more money as 9.9s.) Nice if the owner will run if for you, but you likely won't be able to do a whole range of diagnostics. They are popular motors, and it's Spring. Get the owner to give you as much background as you can get (use and any issues). Make an offer if it looks good to you.

Wow! Sounds easier to buy a new one, however I thought these old 2 strokes were superior to the new 4 strokers. My dad (90) had many of boats and liked his 4 stroke Mercury the best.

i would ask for compression readings first
if 100psi or more its worth to consider
