Anyone know the wiring diagram on a 1976 40HP Johnson? I know the wires for the battery (That's a no brainer) but the other smaller wires I have no idea about what they are or where they go  Anybody? Thanks in advance :)

You really need to be more specific. Are you talking about smaller wires going to the battery or ones on the motor?

I know the two bigger wires go to the battery but the rest I have no idea:

I would also like to know. How about a posting for the electrical diagram?
My current problem is how to kill the engine when running.
Sorry to hi-jack, but it is the same topic...:)

Hijack? No way! I would like the diagram as well. A kill switch will be needed for mine also

Everyone who has the Factory Service Manual has the wiring diagram, Gents.

If you are going to mess with an outboard a Service Manual is the best investment you can make.

Re: 1976 Johnson Wiring

Ummm.....not much help there.
I cannot be buying a service manual for every outboard that some friend, neighbor, etc wants me to fix.
Most of these guys are cash deprived, and I am doing it as a favor, no charge, except for parts.
These motors are so very similar that once you get a good understanding of a few...then the others fall into place.

But, this 1975 40 is different....the ignition is different, and the minimum I need is the kill wire color.
Can't you at least pop with that?

Purple is choke, blue ones are mag, not sure of the other 2 but the thickest one is battery and the other is starter

Try the local library. It is legal to copy individual pages there for "research". Even the Clymer and SELOC manuals are likely to have a useful diagram.

Interestingly, it is legal to copy a page or so at a library but illegal to provide copies to someone else to avoid paying the publisher for his product. That is what copyright law is all about.

Now, if someone sat down and hand drew a diagram no law would be violated.

Depending on the mtr, kill wires are black or black with black /yellow.

Dasel, go to the wiring diagrams in the top secret files and look up '73 to '76 18-25 hp. You'll see where black is spliced into the blue for the stop circuit. Your mtr should be the same.

Re: 1976 Johnson Wiring

I got it figured out.
There are two wires running from each set of points.
One is blue, the other is blue/white.
To kill the engine, you short the two together. That effectively grounds the points at all times.

Yes, I know that the black/yellow is the kill for the newer CDI ignitions. This is older and not the same.
So, what I will do, is attach one blue to the black lead running up to the key, and attach the other blue to the black/yellow running to the key.

When key off, the two blues will be shorted at the key switch. On this engine, there is no need for "ground" up at the key.

Will post the results tomorrow, I hope.

I don't believe I broke any copyright laws describing this here.......sheesh......

That's the way the wiring diagram looks like I told you about. Glad you got it.

Re: 1976 Johnson Wiring

Novax....did you get the info you wanted?
If that wire bundle you are holding is the main engine harness, either the boat side or the engine side, with the Amphenol plug cut off, you should have the following colors:

Blue................. one set of points under the flywheel (not sure if #1 or #2 cyl)
Blue/white........ the other set of points under the flywheel
Red.................. Battery Positive source
White............... Starter solenoid
Purple/white..... Choke

I have found that if you short the two wires, blue and blue/white together, the engine kills.

Also, if you want to use the big red plug on the boat harness with the big BLACK plug on the engine harness (not normally done), all you have to do is run a jumper (splice into the boat side harness) from the black/yellow boat side to the blue/white engine side.
That will allow all normal key functions, and provide for a kill circuit up at the key.

If you need more explanation, PM me.

I haven't had time to check anything yet...not sure what you mean by

. The boat has no wires at all on it. I will have to get a switch and anything else that will be needed to get this motor going. All of the wires on on the motor and I was trying to figure out what was what  Thanks for the help tho, as soon as I get a chance I will try these.
