Well, after careful consideration I grabbed the copper tube with some needlenose pliers and was able to guide it down into what I presume is the hole it came out of and it actually stayed in there. I needed a flashlight to be able to see the hole way down inside the housing. I think the job is finally finished. I made sure the connector hose connected this time when I reattached the lower unit. I put the motor back on the boat and should be good to go. It was a real PITA but should be much easier next time.

Next time, when you use the grease on the key...goob up a bit more and spread it around the tube...it will help it slip into the hose easier.
