After my post a little while ago I decided with the help of this forum to possible rebuild my 1976 Merc 1150. Got it torn apart. #1 piston and rings look like all the rest. #2 piston Looks like its been hitting the top and actually ground some of it away. Top ring looks like its shrunk to the exact piston diameter with no play. Bottom ring not as bad but no play. Serious scoring on Cyl. walls and piston. Seems like the connecting rod, bearings, pin has no more or less play than the other pistons.
So - can anyone tell me why this might happen?
With scored cylinder walls and metal shaving in the cylinder, I think I might need more than honing. Scrap or keep on going?
If I keep on going, what would a BALLPARK. cost be to bore the holes, and get a new rotating assembly except maybe for the crank?
Just another thought. The wire coming off the flywheel magnets have totally crumbled. This repairable or do I need a new flywheel? At what cost?

It will be cheaper to buy a running engine off Craigslist and swap powerheads. From looks you need a complete overhaul and with pistons, stator, newtrigger, gaskets, seals and machine work you looking at a easy $1200. I myself would not overhaul it as its not a power ported engine. (1977 and up & 1500)
