Hi I'm new to the outboard world. I have aquired a motor with a boat attached. I don't know any history. I have made sure that the tell tale is clear changed the fuel filter and primed till fuel ran out of carbs. It started right up but I did notice no water running out of prop and no water out of tell tale. Tell tale had steam comming and then that stopped. That was most likely when all the water in the head dried up. Is this the signs of a bad water pump and imperller? Also put a volt meter at the battery and it did not move much over 12v when given a little gas. Is the stator bad? Oh by the way I did blow compressed air up through the tell tale and could hear air down at the lower unit. Is there someone who can help with these issues. I do plan to buy a factory manual for this motor.
Thanks in advance

you'll definetaly have to pull the lower unit off and have a look, may be the impellar or a blockage. battery should read 13 or 14 while running.

Hi Scatty looks like we are from the same area. PNW. Thanks guys for the advice. It sure is nice to be able to talk to people that want to share their experiance. I have very little to share at this point. I have been reading this site for at least a month and have learned a huge amount. The tip for primming the carbs is priceless. I would have been there many days and many dead batteries later and probably never get the beast started with fear of flooding. Reading is a powerful thing. I will keep you guys posted on my slow progress. I still need a book (with pictures). Thanks again. J

Jet, That motor has an unregulated 6A charging system. The entire system consists of a stator and a full wave (Bridge) rectifier. Check the connections and the rectifier diodes for continuity If the rectifier is bad, you can get a 25A replacement at Radio Shack.

Jet, The rectifier is mounted on the front cowling support, under the switchbox on the starboard side. It has three ring terminals. The fourth connection is fixed to the rectifier casing, which is grounded when it is bonded to the cowling support.

Ok Chris,

I take it that I need to remove the wires and check each post to ground for continuity??

Now on that lower unit what position would the throttle be in? I have read that it needs to be in forward position as the lower unit reverts to forward when it is pulled away from the motor. Is this correct or is there another procedure? J.

Jet, I leave the gearshift in neutral. It will stay in neutral BYW..

On the rectifier, Using an analog ohmmeter, each pair of connections (there are four) will have contiunity one way and when you reverse the leads there will be no continuity,

Re: 1976 merc 1500 150hp

Chris,
I have 3 posts on the rectifier, and the metal body to ground. 2 posts have the yellow wires and the gray wire on them and the +has the red. Well all have the proper flow, one way continuity and the other none. I also disconnected the stator wires that run down the right hand side of engine and with the multi meter on the 2 wires I have continuity, and they are not shorted to ground. So the next step is to see how much voltage is comming out of the stator with the motor running eh?
