1976 Merc 7.5 - LU Oil Flush

I just purchased this 7.5, everything checked out good on the motor until I pulled the LU drain plug. The oil was very thick, like bearing grease thick. I am thinking someone may have pumped bearing grease into the unit.

What would be the best method to get the LU cleaned up? I would hesitate to put any solvent through there for fear of eating up the seals. I don't think the motor was run this way for any period of time as it had a bad CDI before I picked it up, it seems to shift ok and the prop spins.

Run, flush, repeat?

Thanks in advance,
Tyler

Are there any manuals for the 7.5/9.9 posted up here?

Yikes! if it was indeed bearing grease thick, did you get ANY of it out? Well, there are certain oils that will help break down grease but won't attack rubber...WD-40 can do that. I don't know how long or the best method to get all the old grease out. I would be willing to *guess* that filling the L.U. with WD-40 and running it at idle would be safe...... Once again, I've never dealt with this sort of situation. Perhaps other members here can offer other ideas that are helpful!
