Looking for a little help. 1976 Merc 850 Thunderbolt Type V ignition. Looks like it is setup to utilize timing, but everything I’m reading says the switch box collects and distributes the signal for spark. Any idea if this engine should be timed?

Strange question, I think. All engines need to be timed. A 1976 Merc 850 should have 1 switchbox and four coils. The engine requires a particular timing spec when carbs are set to open, and a max timing advance.

I would recommend you purchase a service manual and read the timing, synchronizing and adjusting section, for your motor.

I guess what I was reading was confusing me. I have a SELOC but it does not show particular detail of my setup. Mostly info on units with a distributor. Found a pretty good video on YouTube I’m hoping will solve my issues. I’m a do it yourselfer with little outboard experience, but I’m enjoying the crap out of the trials an tribulations.

Seloc manuals can have really big mistakes in them. For a first timer, you should get an OEM service manual.
