1976 Mercury 1500 - can I use metal carb sync rods from an older motor?

I have a 1976 Mercury 150hp. I broke one of the plastic sync rods that links the carbs. They are not cheap, and this is not the fist time this has happened. Does anybody know if the metal style sync rods used in earlier inline sixes will work with my motor? They look real similar but I'm not sure if they would fit. They are somewhat springy but will not break like the old plastic...

I doubt it the length between carbs is probably greater on a 1500.

Can you source them at a junk yard?
