1976 Mercury 650 overheating

Ok, I just bought an old Tri Hull with a 1976 Mercury 650. The boat has sat unused for 6 years, so I got it for only $500. Not bad, I think.

Anyway, didn't take much to get the motor started, but there was no water coming from the TellTale, and the motor was getting very hot. So, I pulled the lower unit and had the local shop put in a new impeller. Brought it home yesterday and put it back together and started it up and water was coming from the TellTale, and motor was staying cool. But, there was water seeping from nearly all the bolts on the exhaust cover, as well as from the top spark plug hole.

So, I torqued all the exhaust cover bolts since they were very loose. Then I took it out to the lake today and it ran well, didn't get too hot that I couldn't keep my hand on it. So, I brought it home, ran some seafoam thru it and then checked the torque on the bolts around the spark plugs, even though there was no more leak there, just wanted to check. I don't know what that cover is called, I don't think it's the cylinder head, but it could be. Anyway, the top two bolts were a bit loose, so I tightened them, but not too tight, maybe 120 inch pounds.

And now I have no water coming from the TellTale, and the motor is getting super hot again. I don't let it run very long, just long enough to where the top of the motor is getting too hot to touch and then shut her down.

Can anyone help me with this? Would tightening those top bolts around the spark plugs cause the water to get blocked somehow? Or, did something just break loose in there somewhere that blocked the water ports?

FWIW, not related, but I checked the compression and was getting over 120 lbs of compression on all three cylinders. Sound right?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help with this project.

I'm in the same position as you I get water pumped to the head but it is not flowing through water jacket, I,m thinking that I may have scale blocking the water flow. I,ve been contemplating setting the motor in a 5 gal container of vinegar and running it so that the vinegar is pumped through the cooling system.

Yesterday I pulled the exhaust cover off and checked the thermostat and poppet. Poppet seems to move freely so I put it back together without the thermostat just to make sure that wasn’t the problem. Started it up again and still no water flow.

could it be my new impeller already went out?
