Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

.....should really pull the transom now and clean up behind where the wood was...............

I really blame EZ for todays fiasco.... Now I really do have blood, sweat and a few tears into the project....along with a few busted knuckles. I was gonna take it easy and just do some light work today. That went out the window the minute I took EZ advice to take out the transom...lol. :p

Ok, all screws out and bolts out.....PULL. O wait, I need to remove the scupper holes ...PULL.... O wait, I need to remove the eyebolts ... PULL. Nothing. Thought I would be a genius and get out the dish detergent and slather up the sides and bottom... PULL. Nothing. After 40 minutes of hammering at the transom from the inside with a hammer and screwdriver into the wood as leverage *whilst ....under the splashwell curled up in a fetal position did I pop er' loose (did I mention while laying in cold water :D)

I just cant figure out why the template looks strange? Guess Ill have to use a new blade on my jigsaw for that cut.

Anyway... glad I got it out now instead of later (sincere thx this time.. not sarcastic EZ).... and I even cleaned the transom holder slot - I think its called that.

I also wire brushed some spots under the motor mounting plate.

Hey quick question on the bottom inside of the hull after wire brushing some of those spots.... should I be worried about some I would say minor pitting? Should and can it be fixed or should I let it go. I can take a pic of it....prob is until I get a camera .. I dont think my cell-phone camera will get a good enough close-up.

I been working on the trailer for the past day again... Might as well get it done before the boat. Figured I would post these pics.... in case anyone has tried to fix the 8" rollers on your trailer. After pondering for a bit about the busted inserts I came up with an idea  I didnt want to spend $20+ per roller for replacements/inserts. If your roller inserts (not sure of the technical name) looks like mine did (In red... the one on the left is busted...the one on the right is good).

This is what I did... bought some 3/4" PVC piping and cut 1/4" longer than the inserted metal sleeve (this will leave approx 1/8" extra on each end) ... then add 3/4" washers for each side (the washers were just big enough to hold the PVC inside of the metal sleeves). and Voila' :D The red arrow is the sleeve...the green arrow is the PVC and the blue arrow is the washer. O by the way.... there is only the smallest amount of extra movement difference between the rod and PVC from the original set-up. In fact I think it may be better now the inner metal rod has the whole tube of PVC for travel not just the ends.

Just figured Id share. Ill get some pics of the trailer in the next day or so after I carpet the bunks and finish the front winch assembly.
THEN.......... I can finally get back to work on the SS woohoo :D

Figured I would post a few pics of the trailer... I wasnt sold on a white trailer... and after sanding I noticed what seemed to be a off white/dirty yellow. So an off the shelf almond matched very well. After:
- 2 coats of paint
- lotsa new bolts and hardware
- new tires
- some spiffy hubcaps
- new light kit and harness
- new tongue
- new jack
- upgraded to 2x6 bunks.

Its mostly done. I need to carpet the bunks and finish the winch platform. I will add one more pic after those things are finished. My son added the idea of having a racing stripe on the fenders and I thought it was a cool idea too..... so he helped paint some of the (future) boat color to the fenders (royal blue). I have since decided to repaint our racing stripes to black to match black bunk carpet and also I dont think I plan on painting the SS blue...gonna come up with something more custom :D... I think it would look better.

Looking real good Jay, great idea for the trailer rollers. I am still tring to decide what to do with my trailer. It has short bunks up front and wobble rollers at the back. The wobble rollers are responsible for a lot of the dents, dings, and scratches in my hull, so I think they have to go.

Heck no man! I wouldn't give up that nice thick metal C channel trailer with tons of adjustability for anything short for of a brand new aluminum I beam one :D They're great trailers. I had a heck of a time trying to find hub parts for mine though and ended up putting a brand new complete axle on mine from Tractor Supply.

Quick question guys... when you cut off rivets from the ribs (the ones from the preexisting floor)...how do you get the leftovers out... or do you just let the bottom 1/2 of the rivet fall inside the rib and try not to let it bother you :D

I drilled mine and just let the lower half hide in the rib. Probably something wrong with that, but I'm not going to expend a lot of time and energy trying to get them out.

I have another question... I bought epoxy the other day and in the directions it said the wood/ply should have less then 20% humidity prior to coating... now just short of having a moisture meter.. would most ply from the home stores have less then 20%? If not.. would it rot from the inside out?

Jay,

Good work so far man! I've got basically the exact same boat as you. It's crazy when I got mine and decided to restore it I never would have thought there would be so many people restoring the same boat as me at the same time. Now that I'm nearly finished I have the opportunity to share some of the answers I was given by the wonderful fellas at iboats. anyway as far as the plywood goes I wouldn't sweat it too much, if it seems like there is an excess amount of moisture in it then maybe sit it outside or somewhere dry for a couple of days and it will be fine.

When I drilled the old rivets out of the ribs I just let them fall. Some of them fell down through the weep holes and I was able to suck them out with the shop vac. Keep up the good work brother

cool... thanks.. SD. I wish we had enough dry days to do that. When the weather does dry up .. I will leave them out for a day or 2 before I epoxy. I just bought an air cut-off tool... to zip off the rivets. I didnt have a Dremel or such. Did I mention.... I love tools :D

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

When I did my SS the rivit ends fell out when I flipped it for painting. While it was up side down I also perssure washed the inside. Maybe a pressure washer or compressed air would blow them out while the boat is upright.

I too didn't know about all the forums here. It would have been a big help at the time. Luckily I managed to do a few things right anyway. These guys are probably the reason I'm working on my second project. Now I have MBS!!!!

MP that's a real good idea, I am going under the boat while it is upside down for paint, tap out the rivets with a punch and they should all head to side of the ribs. Tip the hull to one side vacum out the rivets, then tap the otherside and tip that way and vacum them up.

Finally .... Im done with the trailer resto!!! I think it turned out OK. After many hours and more $$ than I want to admit I put into it . I have changed out all the nuts and bolts.... they are all shiny and new. A new winch, tires, jack, tongue, bow stops and lights all around. Here are a few pics. I also changed the stripe from blue to black... Dont think I plan on painting the boat blue anymore.... And If I do paint orange... I might even get rid of the stripe.. so the boat/trailer wont look too halloween like with (orange and black) Tomorrow I finally get to work on the SS. I figured now that the trailer is done.... as soon as my floor is epoxied and down I can flip and paint. Then when flip time comes after paint she goes on the new trailer.

Think I might still get some "Tee Nee" trailer stickers off the net... just to give it the extra detail.... I like details :D. Only problem is that I cant find the replacement stickers that were on the trailer to begin with..... they looked almost like the 'Tee Nee' lettering inside of a square (which looked like an old TV set).... if that makes sense.
