Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

You can get rusto tinted? That would be SWEET! I'm looking into this. I dunno about the Ace stuff.
I cut my transom the same way and had to sand it smooth too:facepalm:. Hey, we both made a rooky mistake. Guess we'll just have to do another resto right after these to get it right.:D No worries so long as the twist nails have some meat to bite into wer'e good to go.

I cant wait to see that teal, its one of my options.

Looking good!

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Well, I am totally disappointed. After all the prep work I put into the boat (sanding whole hull 2x and etching primer for the whole boat) The first coat on the hull looks like garbage. I dont think its the ACE paint. I read some auto forums and forums here about adding "enamel hardner". What happened is that it almost started getting too thick for rolling in the middle of painting :(. So you can see some lap marks and spots that almost gelled up when I tried to touch them with a brush and roller again. I think adding the hardner is what caused the paint to set up too quickly. I plan on sanding the high spots off and going for the 2nd coat. At least its the bottom and not the sides or top. I am only 1% glad this happened here and not where much of it would be visible. Does anyone know why this may have happened?

Color is a teal... but a bluer shade of teal:

This might be referred to as orange peel? This is one of the many heavy thick spots... either way it stinks:

*UPDATE*... Im a Moron - I did use the correct amount of hardner after checking..So what gives

Going for a bulletproof finish? At least you figured out what you did.

2nd coat on this morning.... and no hardner added. Lets put it this way. I should have painted it orange and told everyone the orange peel paint effect was done on purpose. This time without hardner at least it didnt flash/gel/dry too quicky painted great.... good 2 coat coverage.... but the peel is insane :(:(:(:(:(. I really should have sprayed it like I was planning. Just after reading many resto threads about the roller method. I fig it was easier and cheaper to roll and get near* same results. O well

That orange peel on the bottom may actually get you a couple more mph. Thousands little slips of air between hull and water = less friction. If you don't like it you can always light sand a spray one more coat. I think spraying with hardner would be the way to go because it goes on faster.

Looks good to me and I really like the color. If your paint doesn't fall off, you'll be miles ahead of me!!!

I have painted the first coat of the white (actually a light shade of off-white). I decided to roll and tip this time, as opposed to just roll and roll :D. Not sure which method I like better as you can see some light flashing and bristle stroke marks. They didnt lay down as hoped. Maybe Im just really picky. I thinned the paint to about 5% with mineral spirits so was it the thinning? Is it the Ace paint? Not really sure, but If I do it again I would spray. Pictures of the boat in the shade make the teal looks ever more blue than ever. A few pics:

Ill post a pic later when I can get a good pic of the teal color. Better yet..... we have a rain check for the camera, it needs be stocked since its RAINED MANY TIMES in the past 2 weeks :p

I sprayed mine after rolling out 1 coat on the bottom. Rolled my consoles and do not like how they came out.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Sorry guys not a whole lot to report..... I have been working on the motor and "honeydo" list lately. I actually posted a forum -help message regarding my "starter rotating slowly". I have been spending so much time on the SS. I need to focus on the motor... cause even if the boat is done and the motor is not. I will still be high and dry. I hope my goal to at least take my boys out tubing/fishing a few times before the summer is over isnt too unrealistic at this point (with sooooo much left to do) :D

Hey quick question, I was thinking of going with the older vintage style decals instead of the original one for my 76', what you guys think?:

(wernt the originals stamped plastic and not decals though?)

I like the vintage decals, those are sweet!

Forget whether or not it's period correct, go with what looks the coolest:D

Nice work on the paint job BTW, it looks terrific.

I take out my SS on small lakes with just the Minn Kota or 5.5hp Johnson, some of my best fishing holes are too small to even run the big motor. So maybe you can at least splash it while you are tweaking the OB.

My Jet Star has stamped plastic or aluminum emblems. You can go to a desiner and have them add an embossed shadow or something to the decals to give them a 3D look though if that's what you're after.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Well... im totally jazzed. I finally got my OB running. It purrs like a kitten too. The one from the glasser, which makes it a real good deal at $250. So I spent the last 2 days hand cleaning out every square inch of the motor . Its clean as a whistle :D. Im so HaPpY ... just fig I take a short video and share... bad quality though. We finally got our camera. So from now on the pics and vids will be of much better quality... I promise :D.

Actually its a terrible cell phone video.... Ill update with a better one in a day or 2. Im gonna get back to work on the SS.. and work on my new garden tractor. Its a 1969 Sears ST/10 in pretty good running shape with plow/snowblower and mower deck. Gonna rusto it too after the SS is done. LOL :D ;)

I really like it Jay! That one looks really clean/sharp! I just about bought the blue version of that little Sears tractor there a couple years back - ended up with the JD 110.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Finally got the second coat of white on this morning. The coverage looks good, instead of rolling/tipping I decided to roll/roll. I fig instead of looking at brush strokes I might as well look at roller stipple (orange peel) hey at least it uniform. Few pics........ it didnt turn out too bad. Im prob just being too picky

First pic is finally a representaion of the teal color:
