Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Alright guys... I decided to go with deck screws... the shortest ones I could find were 1 1/4". I was careful not to overcountersink the floors, because I realized the screws could potentially go thru the bottom of the hull. Countersunk just enough and hand tightened nicely... wont be a worry. Anyway, I fig I would add a mini-pic of my bilge install. Figured I might as well ... I did remember seeing a resto with a mention to bilge install, but could find it:

The top left is the bracket for the bilge. The top right is the only way I could hold the nut under the screw whilst trying to install the bilge bottom.... I used a piece of tape on the wrench, which also held the nut inside the wrench while I was trying to get it on :D. The bottom left is "cup" not sure what its call is installed. Then the last pic is the bilge installed. Just the right amount of clearance under and behind to get the bilge off if needed:

I had installed some noodles..... decided to install full ones on the bottom... then cut some of them in 1/2 to fit on top. Finally I covered the noodles with the sheet foam for a better sub-surface for the flooring:

I will add some pics of more progress tomorrow. I did get the stern most ply installed, but had to leave shortly after...... went to a free concert in the park to watch ZZ TOP...

ROCK ON!!
(by the way the concert was awesome... was waaaaay to packed for me)

Ok... floor is done.. Yeehaw! For anyone doing floors in the future. I noticed that some of the edge voids that I thought I had filled were not (I thought I checked them like 2x before using the rest of my epoxy ). The ones that seemed unsealed were the really deep voids/pockets. Basically I plugged a few of them up with some 5200. Im pretty sure this will be sufficient enough to keep water out for some time to come.

5200.jpg

Also I did deck screws like EZ did. I did used the shortest ones which were 1 1/4" in length. All except for about 2-3 of the screws held tight and did not strip. But If you look at the pic you can see that the screw has a long shaft in relation to the screw size. Therefore if you do countersink them too far the screw portion is below the aluminum it is intended to grab. Another thing to keep in mind in case I do another resto :D

Hardly any leftovers from... about 50 noodles, 1 sheet of 2" and 2 sheets of 1":

(I was stuffing floatation in voids like crazy)

Final last pic ... floor done:

Looks so shiny its a shame to cover it with vinyl.

Ya know concept.. I did write down all my dimesnions for just this occasion. I just need to find them out in the garage . When I do I will post the measurements.

One last post for the evening. I've been busy as a bee today. I decided to carpet my bow seating ply.......after a yummy dinner my wife made of course, complete with fresh veggies from our garden :D. Anyway heres a pic:

bowseats.jpg

I think I plan on going with a grey floor... grey carpet on bow seat area and upper gunwales. I might get creative with the lower gunwale boards.. not sure for now. Or I my just go with a white vinyl.

*Do you guys think I have a chance to be out on the water by end of August (from the rebuild stage I am at now).... from your experience or am I doomed to wait till next year :(?

Thanks Jeter.

So I did a few things today... did some tweaking to the floor to get things right. Cut out some more of the panels today and set the bow components in place to get a feel of the ship. My wife was like "let me take a picture of you and Abby (our golden, who was wet in the pic... she loves the hose)".... so here it is LOL (so now you guys can put a goofy face to my goofy posts :p

meandabby.jpg

I also got my decals in the mail today and put them on ... they look much smaller than the original, but I actually like them like that.

decal-1.jpg

I had an idea.... (insert comment here). Instead of cutting out the standard side panels why not cut out something totally different.. just to spice up the interior. I added some cardboard to what Im thinking of cutting out of ply. I kinda rounded the edges some at the top front and rear. I plan on wrapping it in white vinyl.... I know its gonna be a PITA. But I think it will look good. What do you guys think about the idea?

Panelidea.jpg

And since I was brainstorming.... I thought of redoing the rear sliding hatches and cutting out large Starcraft "S" logo in the middle. Then replacing the aluminum screening behind it. (Very bad pic... but you get the idea)

rearhatch.jpg

What do you guys think good idea... or too cheesy?

I like the side panels with the curves, looks nice.:)

I do think it would be a real b*&%^ to get vinyl to lay down without wrinkles though.

The S on the panels would be nice as long it's somewhat subtle and not too over the top.

The best thing about restoring a boat is slightly modifying certain things to set it apart, so I like your ideas.:D

I like your side panel idea but I think the vinyl wrapping will be too difficult to look nice.

Coming along very nicely, I think you'll have splash down this summer, If you keep at it.
Keep up the good work.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Got a few things done today...... primed and sanded the topsides... then gave it a light topcoat. Ill tell ya spray is the way. Next resto I spray the whole boat. It literally took longer to clean the spray gun then it did to paint. Anyway, I just wanted to add a pic of the taping job. Taping the boat for spray took literally hours. I just had to add a pic of all the tape:

tape.jpg

So here is a view from the stern....

paint2-1.jpg

And here is a view from the bow.....

paint1-1.jpg

Its hard to really see how it looks... but for a light coat it looks pretty good. I will add another pic when Im done painting the topsides. In the stern pic... you can see the section I want to leave bare alum :D

After looking at my pics.. I think I should have installed my transom.. and banged down the corners b4 painting..:facepalm:

Have a good weekend guys.....
