ok fellow boaters....help out the new guy. this is my first boat. it's a 1976 VIP, ski boat and there's a seat in front of the driver. below the seat is a compartment.....is this supposed to be a livewell or an ice chest? it has a drain/fill port that goes out the side of the boat, but won't fill with water, unless u put a lot of weight up front. even then, only a little water. thinking an ice chest because when the boat sits level, the hole is above waterline. i question this because the most people i've had on the boat at once is 2......not enough weight maybe?

Sounds like a bait well not a livewell, livewells are bigger, bait wells are sometimes found under seats, I suppose a livewell could be found under a seat as well depending on the boat. If I recall right I did cut out a bait well out of an older bomber fish and ski boat that I stripped recently, it was located under the middle seat by the driver's seat.

See if there is an aerator hooked to this compartment, if so it is a livewell or a bait well.

If it's a ski boat I would think it would be an ice chest. I have a Stingray bowrider and I know that Stingray puts ice chests in all their boats. Mine is just a plastic 46 quart container mounted in the floor that drains into the bilge. I use mine to store cleaning supplies.

That's easy, ski boats have coolers, bass boats have bait & live wells.

I just got rid of my 76 vip. It is indeed an ice chest. Only problem with it is that you get a little river water in your cooler when people go up front.

put a stopper in the holes no river water, then pull the stopper to drain.
i have a live well on my pontoon, it will get used for both.

thanx all....there is no aerator and i've been thinking about buying a plug, for the hole. and hooking up an aerator to it. unless i'm in the need for a cold one...then it's an icechest....problem solved!!!! thanx again for all the responses
