Well for some reason I didn't notice the center hole where the carbon button goes is partially broken off. There was no plastic in the cap so it has been like this for a long time. Should I go ahead and replace it or will the carbon button stay put. I sure don't want something coming loose and destroying the rotor. I may have just answered my own question.

Gee, I would have thought a '77 would have a blue plastic cap. The older ones were beige.

I have had the motor since 1981 and to be honest didn't start working on it myself until I pulled the boat back out of the shed 3 years ago. I couldn't tell you if it was on it in 1981 when I bought it or some mechanic swapped it out over the years. No idea.

Should I look for a NOS mercury one or just buy a CDI?

Thanks,
Kevin
