HI im new to this forum and need a little help with the motor it wont start in neutral gear... i have to start it in a high forward with a little bit of starting fluid. once i begin to slowly let go of the throttle it begins to die but i can keep it running if a constantly give it choke....the model of the outboard is 15704m...fishing season is almost here!!

DO NOT use starting fluid, no oil in starting fluid.

First check what the compression is with a compression gauge, make sure you have good equal compression (report back) on both cylinders, 5 pulls should do it. Second , if the motor has been sitting for a while chances are the carb need to come off, be dissassembled, soaked in carb cleaner, washed with water and blown dry with compressed air. Pick yourself up a complete carb kit and replace all the internals. Screw the idle needle in all the way until seated and back out 1 1/2 turns, go from there.

PS- the starter has to come off to get at the right carb nut, just make sure you keep the bolt in the rewind stater and use something to hold it together (I use electrical tape)

Welcome to Iboats, we encourage buying from the Iboats store!

That motor should not be able to start in gear unless someone has disconnected the neutral safety unit on the manual starter. No real problem if it is changed as many fishermen do not like that safety system.

However I am wondering why it has to be in gear for you to be able to start it. With it in gear you are just moving the lower unit gears & creating more effort when you pull the rope. The in gear should have nothing to do with the timing or carb setting.

I agree with btking, it sounds like carbureation

Well the engine has that linkage to stop it from going full throttle in neutral, and he mentioned he had to start it in high forward. I would assume thats refering to throttle postion so maybe in neutral it just cant be throttled up enough to start...

I'll third on the carb guess though. Its always a good place to start.
