Considering buying one. What to check before making decision. Compression numbers, wter pump operation, lower unit integrity, ie seals etc. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Yeh all that, a test run on a boat in the water is always best, running on a hose don't amount to beans, it could run just as well with a dead coil.

Normal compression on that engine is just over 110 lbs when the engine was new with factory heads. I'd plan on replacing the impeller if you buy the engine, along with the thermostats. That early model does not have the overboard water telltale. Check the oil in the lower unit for water intrusion. Make sure the engine comes with the remote power trim junction box-they are hard to find.
