Hello all,
I just got this 1977 175hp Evinrude and it had sat for a long time. The wiring and connections were all very corrodide so I replaced batter cables, and cleaned all the connections as I could not get even get it to crank utilizing a remote start switch at the engine. My problems are I am not getting any ANY spark at the plugs and I also am still unable to get it to crank from the key on the control box. I figured even if the power packs were bad and the liklihood of both bad at once is kinda remote that I have a problem somewhere else. Does anyone have any idea's? they would be much appreciated. Thank you.

There's a fuse in one of the smaller RED wires leading from the starter solenoid that supplies voltage to the ignition switch. Possibly it's blown.

Check the starter by running the battery cables directly to the starter. If the engine cranks over, the cranking problem is elsewhere.

If the engine does not crank over, how are you checking the spark? Spark plugs must be removed when checking spark. If cranking the engine via a pull rope, the key must be ON or have the large RED electrical plug disconnected.

Thank you for the excellent information. I can get it to crank fine at the engine just not from the key. I will try to disconnect the ignitions main mult prong plug and again check for spark. Thank you again.:)

Re: 1977 175hp Evinrude Electrical Problems

Hello all, just thought I would post an update. I can get the 175 started and runs great with the ignition taken out of the equation(utilizing a remote starter at the engine with the ignition plug unplugged). If I connect the ignition plug I get the engine to crank but it does not even attempt to fire, it will blow the inline fuse at the motor after two or three revolutions and will also blow the fuse if I attempt to use the electric choke? Seems I have a short somewhere, just need to find it which is probably going to be the tricky part. I am not that much of an electrician. Thank you to everyone for there help:)

Update 2 - Can now utilize the key start after taking the kill switch out of the equation, appears that is what was causing the problem. She now fires up.
