This motor sat up in my neighbor's yard for several years, I offered to fix it for him. Model number is 35753C. Bought and installed a carb kit, there was alot of gumming and varnish. Got it all cleaned up, reassembled (w/ the help of the shop manual via local library), and back on motor. Bought new 6 gallon tank and fuel line and primer bulb. Gave primer bulb a squeeze, fired right up. Ran for 15 seconds or so, then died. Smelled flooded. I let it sit overnight, came out the next morning and turned it over. No choke (elect. choke on this model), no bulb priming. Fired right up, ran for 20 seconds, then died. Again, smelled flooded. Removed the fogging plug to look down throat of carb, there was fuel present in the throat. Here are a few other steps I've taken: removed fuel line to carb, turned over engine. Good looking fuel supply. Choke is not closing inappropriately. I think it's getting too much gas but have no idea how to make it stop. Maybe a float adjustment. Any advice and guidance will be appreciated.

Howdy, JHar.

I think you are on the right track. Float not cutting off flow to the carb when bowl is full.

When you redid the carb did you replace the float? It may have sunk. Something maybe didn't get back in correctly.

Good luck. :)

Hi JB, thanks for your quick reply. The carb kit came with a float, so the original did get replaced. The needle valve and seat were replaced as well. I also notice that if I run the motor w/o the plastic baffle, fuel starts coming out of a hole on the top left side of the carb face. Thought that was most unusual. If the primer bulb is squeezed more than once, fuel comes flying out of the same hole.

Hi JHar
While your checking the float, make sure the little main nozzle gasket is installed and in good shape.

Checked the main nozzle, it was pretty "gunked" up but looks good now. The needle has a tiny wire/spring attached to the top of it. Any advice on how to insure this gets on properly?

Sorry JHar
I ment to say Gasket. Main nozzle gasket. The little spring hooks around the notch on the float valve needle, Then it slides onto the metal float arm.

Gasket is brand new also, but you may have hit the nail on the head. The tiny wire part isn't laid over the float arm. I'll have to break it all back down again, but at least I've got a good place to start!

Jhar

When you have the carb off and apart - chech the float valve function like this:

Hold the carb upsidedown with float and needle installed. Blow (by your mouth) in the gas intake channel. ( tastes nice ) airflow should be blocked by the weight of floater and the needle valve. Lifting floater should allow air to flow.
Colgate takes the taste :D

Thanks, folks, my neighbor is really going to freak out when he gets back in town. I broke the carb down (this is sad, it takes me about 15 minutes start to finish now), placed the needle valve wire in the proper position, and BAM! she's up and running. I have some idle speed and mixture adjustment to do tomorrow, replace the impeller, and I'm hitting the water! COmpletely awesome, thanks so much for the help eveyone!

Ok sounds like your might be having problems with the float. Make sure that the gas your using is clean and inside the float is clean. With the needle inside the float make sure when you push with your finger that the float it seals good. If not adjust it to.Then put back together try . I hate these types of jobs because you will smell like gas and get gas on you very easy. But that sounds like the problem make sure the needle seal it to stop the gas if not make it.

Took it out for "sea trial" this weekend. Runs great, tiny miss at idle but this will get fixed with a bit more fine tuning. Again, thanks to everybody for the help!
