Hey guys,
I have a 1977 470 Mercruiser and need help or suggestions on how to troubleshoot a trim issue. Took the boat out to the lake today everything ran good except on my way back to the ramp, i noticed it didnt want to go into reverse, it worked in reverse earlier today, but as im traveling to the ramp to load up, she decided to not completely go into reverse.

I got the boat back home and did some troubleshooting. In the up position it would shift into reverse no problem, in the down position it wouldnt( made alot of noise). After making some shift linkage changes, i started testing and noticed outdrive will not go back down, it will come up, but will not go down now. I didnt touch anything regarding the trim as i made the adjustments to the shift linkage and now the damn thing wont go down. Pushing the up button the solenoid makes a clicking noise, but doesn't make a noise at all when i hit the down button.

Please help!

Gently tap around of the top of the trim motor. If it starts running again then you probably have the brushes stuck in their holders or they are just worn out. If the armature is not pitted and the brushes are stuck be careful removing the commutator head. There is a small ball bearing in the end of the armature shaft so do not loose it. After the brushes are cleaned up put a dab of silicone grease in each holder. To keep the brushes in the holders cut a piece of coat hanger wire 6” then bend it into a “V” to keep the brushes in their holder while putting the commutator head back on then pull the wire out.
