I just bought a old 17 ' starcraft American. I replaced a coil, starter and starter solenoid. does anyone have any information on the color coding for the motor cable assembly? As soon as I hook up the battery (Key off) the starter engages and starts cranking. It didn't do this before which leads me to believe I messed the wiring up. The cover to the terminal posts had a diagram on it but it is weatherd and no longer readable. Also with a quick squirt of starting fluid to the intakes It will turn over for a brief minute then stall out. Is this an indication that it isn't getting gas? I losend the fuel line at the carbs and squeezed the primer ball and gas shot out. So I believe I am getting gas up to that point. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. I am used to working on cars but have very limited knowledge on 2 cycle marine engines. Thanks!

Welcome to Iboats. rebuild kits are instore for the carbs after a through cleaning, including removing the jets. unplug the big red plug, and connect battery cable. if it doesn't turn over then, the problem is in the controller wiring. to get a color code you need to get a service manual OEM at kencook.com.

I was told all three carbs were recently rebuilt. I am thinking about redoing them just to rule it out. I am not sure what u mean by big red plug. Also have any input on the fuel issues?

fuel issue is stuck float needle valves in the carbs, not allowing fuel in, or clogged low speed jets, not allowing fuel out to intake. the controls usually connect to the motor wiring harness with a big round Red Plug. there is the plug in the lower part of this picture.

So your saying dis-connect the "big red plug" then jump the starter?

Alright I got it started but I didn't have the water on so after about 30 seconds I killed the engine. So I turned the water on and No luck. I noticed that after I try to start it fuel is coming out of the carbs. (The motor is tilted back) is this normal? Could it be "flooded"? I think I am real close but just need to let it run for a good while to clean everything out. The boat hasn't ran since 05. Thank you for your help so far

I have a 1976 75 hp Evinrude hustler, almost identical motor.
Went through the same stuff this year as you are doing.

If you have not removed and rebuilt the carbs, you need to do this. It's not that hard, and if you are familiar with basic carbuerator rebuilds, this will be a snap. The fuel leaking out is likely due to stuck floats, most likely stuck in the "down" position and leaving the valve open. Just get three rebuild kits and some carb cleaner and get it fixed right. You will need a special screwdriver to pull the jets. I made my own with a bench grinder and an old small flathead screwdriver. Somewhere on here there is a picture.
While you're at it, replace all the fuel lines. A couple bucks in hoses buys a lot of peace of mind.
Also, get the OMC manual (not the clymer) it's better.

You also did not mention if you had replaced the waterpump impeller. This is mandatory. Running the lake with a bad one is the quickest way to need to buy a new motor.

Check out the "awakening a sleeping outboard" thread on here. Very helpful.
Good luck.

Hello bdahlka,
Which American do you have? I have a '74 15-footer with a Stinger on it. Makes for a very nice combo!
As for the motor issues, the manual should handle most of it, particularly the wiring stuff. You don't want to mess that up too much as it is possible to cook stuff if you have 12V going where it shouldn't...

Re: 1977 75HP Johnson Stinger Wiring and Fuel issues

I've got a 1975 75 HP I recently rebuilt and I'm thinking the wiring is pretty much the same. The solenoid mounts onto the top rear corner of the exhaust covers. There wil be two large posts on the solenoid, the top large post will have one 6 gauge wire running from it to the starter. Nothing else. The other large post will have a positive cable from the battery attached to it and also (2) red wires from the moter harness. The two wires from the harness will probably be crimped together into one terminal end. One of the two smaller post will be wired directly to the powerhead as ground. The other small terminal will have a white wire from the harness attached to it. Hopefully this will help.

I have a 77 16' starcraft American. Good news I got it running by hand choking the crabs and now it starts as easy as turning on a light. It's Great!!! Now I need to look into replacing the water pump and doing some restoration on the interior....already bought the outdoor carpet and new Marine vinyl. Im gonna give it a test drive this weekend
