The flywheel key is very small on these outboards.-----It's job is to locate the flywheel for timing.----The flywheel is driven by locking tapers.-----Imagine a 9.9 HP and a 300 HP using the same key !
Don't give the Bean Counters any Ideas

The ones on mowers were usually ally , but then the flywheels were quite light too with most of the flywheel effect coming from the mass of the blade .
Just looking at the Tohatsu , it has a spindly lightweight looking crankshaft and a solid flywheel and a doorstep of a (steel) key ,makes me wonder just what would give if it all stopped in a hurry. I already know that crankshaft wont tolerate a lot of twisting to knock it out of true (built up crank ) Someone dropped the 1st one and it wouldnt even sit in the block let alone turn. .

Part# 307480 is a flywheel key used on a 9.9 hp and also on a 250hp V-8 model.

Yeah , I spose that the tapers lock the parts together does ,as you say , mean the key is just a locator .I believe some auto makers are not bothering with the key any more .....on cam sprockets, thats a real leap of faith

IF you do not TIGHTEN hat flywheel nut to specified FOOT POUNDS ? You will keep tearing the key apart. I tore apart 2 before the parts guys taught me what to do on the 3rd one. Still good after 30 ? years. I borrowed his Torque Wrench set at the correct Foot Pounds.

Yep 🙂 I am waiting for Ali to deliver my belt wrench thing so I can torque the flywheel nut properly . Mmmm, decent quality torque wrenches that can do left hand threads are a bit thin on the ground . 😀
