I'd like to start out by thanking those folks who helped me last time around. I changed the plugs, charged the battery, and it started right up. That was a cheap fix. Now I want to change the water pump. I have the 1977 evinrude service manual, but it is written to tear down the lower unit entirely; I just want to replace the water pump. It's manual shift, and model 85799s.

Hi HBF
Just follow your manual. Only do the procedures that pertain to the water pump. My advice is for you to read the book three times. Then begin the job.

HBF4,

If your manual tells you how to tear down the lower unit, it must tell you how to get it off/on.

The water pump sits directly on top of the L/U.

I looked over the manual, and this shouldn't be a problem. Thanks.

This is just some notes to go along with the factory description.

Pull carbs (clean 'em while they're off), disconnect shift linkage under carbs, remove the 6 (?) nuts holding the LU to the mid-section, pull the LU off. Be careful to save the plastic tubes that act as guides for the water tubes when you re-install the LU. Also, be careful not to thread the shift rod up or down on it's threads - it wants to stay the same length.

Once the LUs off, straight-forward to pull the pump top off & replace the impeller. A little grease or lube on the impeller vanes will help. By the way, a new impeller, if dry, can be wicked hard to turn within the pump housing - first time I encountered it I thought the LU was locked up.

If you want to be real thorough, pressure check the LU while you have it off, or just go ahead & change the prop shaft, pump, and shift rod seals.

I have used a shotgun brush to clean out the shift rod tube on engines that've seen a lot of salt water. Other than that, re-assembly is just like the manual, and you need a helper. Here's where you re-use those plastic tubes, by the way.
