good clean battery cables, fully charged battery.. it is doing what it is suppose to. when the motor kicks, it turns the flywheel faster than the starter, and the starter drops out. remove plugs, using a spark tester check your spark, check you compression.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at auto parts store.

Re: 1977 85 hp johnson starting problems

I cleaned the cables & battery they are getting good connection I hooked up the jumper cables to make sure it was getting enought power. I dont have a spark plug tester only way I know how to test a spark plug is to take it out & hold it to the block & hit the key to see if I got spark & "get shocked"

I have another question on a 1977 85 johnson whats the compression % should be at ?

The compression numbers are not as important as the consistant numbers on all cylinders - (did i say that right:confused:)
My '87 70hp Johnsons are all about 120#

you want you compression to be within 10% high to low. the spark checker is less than $10 at any auto parts store. needs to be set at 1/2 to 7/16 inch gap, and have a good bright spark jump the gap.
