Hello!

Engine: 1977 Evinrude 85hp V4 Model 85793, S/N J0005666

I purchased this engine from a gentleman who says it had not been run in a little over a year, but was running fine. I've changed the gear lube and checked the water pump.

I am able to start the engine- it back-fired once or twice but does start and will run with the warm-up lever raised.

However, when I try to fully lower the warm-up lever or put it in gear it dies. Any ideas what might be causing this to happen? My thoughts are clean the carbs and perhaps de-carb the engine.

I bet if you tear down the carbs, clean them real good and put kits in when you re-assemble them your problem will be solved. Also make sure you have fresh fuel

OK- started the motor today and this time was able to get it into gear. I'm sure the carbs do need a good cleaning anyway.

I did notice that the idle is too slow- still wanted to die when I lowered the warm-up lever. How do I adjust the idle speed?? Guess I'll have to do some more reading!

Don't mess with any adjustments until you do the carbs.

What did you mean when you said that you checked the waterpump??

Also put in a new set of plugs.
