Hi,
I am working on my motor which I just purchased and tried to start it but got no spark. I fiddled around with the black yellow wire in the power pack and ended up getting spark and it ran fine, stated it a few times.
So, I thought I would start from the beginning and replace my impeller, all that went well, except the impeller from the book says its a key wedge and it was a woodruff key.
I put it all back together and now have no spark by using the key or by jumping the solenoid with the big red plug separated. (and the black yellow wire attached and unattached)I had kind of a thin wire on the rectifier and I took one from a 73 50hp because it was the same part number but that didn't work either.
There was a blown fuse in the holder that is not close to the rectifier. It was kind of in the back more. The one up by the rectifier was OK. Replaced that. It was all taped up so I'm not sure if it had been blown for awhile or it just happened.
The black yellow grounds out with the key off and opens when turned to the on position.
Is there a test I can do with the power pack with a regular VOM? I can order a new power pack but I hate to trouble shoot that way. (been there done that)
The evinrude dealer here is booked until Sept. 1st so either I find a fix or put it in storage for a month. I'm desperate. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Phil
This is a 1977 85799S model motor and serial number J0001319.
Its a silver starflite

Tried to disconnect the two yellow wires to test the rectifier, still no spark. Removed all plugs to make sure it was spinning fast enough, still no spark.

Thanks for the link. I was getting 9 volts on the purple wire so I disconnected some wires, plugs and made sure they were tight, removed my fuse holders and used contact cleaner and sprayed them out. Installed new fuses. Somewhere along the line I tightened a loose connection or had a dirty fuse holder because it started up after that. Ran great, 40 mph, that is fast enough for me.
Although I have a bare floor in there and the fiberglass seemed a little thin so I'll finish the floor before I run it again.
Thanks again for your help.
